5 Weightlifting Myths That Are Holding Back Your Progress

If you believe any of these, you’re leaving results on the table. Here are five of the most common weightlifting myths Christian hears, and the truth behind each one.

Myth 1: Lifting weights will make you big and bulky

Getting really big takes years of dedicated training and eating to grow. That doesn’t happen by accident. For most people, lifting weights leads to a body that looks more toned and feels stronger.

Myth 2: No pain, no gain

Being sore isn’t the goal, and it isn’t a sign of a good workout. Some muscle soreness is normal, but if you feel a sharp pain, stop. Consistency will always beat punishment: the workouts you can keep doing week after week are the ones that change your body.

Myth 3: Cardio burns more fat than lifting

Weightlifting builds muscle, and muscle helps drive your metabolism. The more muscle you carry, the more calories your body uses each day, even at rest. When it really comes down to losing weight, it’s about calories in versus calories out, and strength training helps on the “calories out” side long after the workout is over.

Myth 4: You have to lift heavy every session

You don’t need to max out every time you train. Consistency and progressive overload (gradually asking a little more of your body over time) matter much more than how heavy you go on any single day.

Myth 5: Machines are just for beginners

Machines give you more control over the movement and can reduce the risk of injury. Experienced lifters use both machines and free weights, because each has a job to do.
